Islam is believed to have entered Bali between the 14th and 15th centuries (around the 1300s–1400s). It was brought by followers of the Majapahit royal entourage, such as Raden Modin and Kiai Abdul Jalil, as well as by Nusantara traders. They later settled in Gelgel, Klungkung, where they established an early Muslim community and built the first Gelgel Mosque.

Below are key points in the history of Islam’s arrival in Bali:

14th Century (Gelgel Kingdom): Early Muslims arrived alongside King Dalem Ketut Ngelesir’s delegation from Majapahit, around 1380–1460 AD.

16th Century (Wali Pitu): The spread of Islam continued through figures known as the Wali Pitu (the seven saints) in Bali, although Hindu influence remained dominant under the reign of King Dalem Waturenggong.

17th Century (Bugis Settlements): Muslim communities became more established in North Bali (1642) and West Bali (1669), including Bugis migrants and refugees from Sulawesi who resisted Dutch rule.

These early Muslim communities developed in areas such as Gelgel (Klungkung), Loloan (Jembrana), and Pegayaman (Buleleng).
